This past weekend marked the 25th Anniversary of Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing. This has always been one of my favorite movies, I've seen it multiple times at different points in my life and each time I catch something new or a message hits me even harder as I mature and understand more of what's going on around me and what's happened before me. Even 25 years later this movie still strikes a cord and is just as important now than it was then.
In celebration of his work, today, June 30th is now proclaimed "Do the Right Thing Day" and the corner block of Stuyvesant and Lexington where the movie was shot has now also been deemed, Do the Right Thing Way. Spike honored this with a block party on Saturday with music, games and surprise guests.
Surprise appearances by Dave Chappelle (who was hilarious and so nice signing autographs the entire time), Wesley Snipes (who came out dancing!), Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def(came out to perform), Public Enemy(performed there hit Fight the Power) and someone we missed by a few moments, Erykah Badu!!
My friends and I spent this historic day taking it all in and having a little fun at the Beats Music gif booth.
And just when you thought it couldn't get any better on Sunday BAM screened Do the Right Thing, so for those who never saw it or (like me) never got the chance to see it on the big screen, we were treated to a once in a lifetime opportunity. Not only were we able to see it but we were able to experience it with some of the cast and crew from the movie, who were all dispersed in the theatre watching along with us.
Cast and crew came down after the screening for a Q&A -- Cast members include (r-l) Spike Lee, Rosie Perez, Danny Aiello, Bill Nunn (Radio Raheem!!), Joie Lee and Rick Aiello
Perfect way to end a perfect weekend!
Also for anyone in Brooklyn between now and July 10th BAM is hosting: By Any Means Necessary: A Spike Lee Joints Retrospective. You can come and watch some of Spike's best movies on the big screen, more info here.
